Mumbai Cruise Port: What to Do With a Day Ashore

The Gateway of India at dusk, Mumbai

You have one day in Mumbai and a ship to catch. That second part changes everything about how you should spend the first.

We have been taking cruise passengers around the city for years. Here is what actually matters when you only have the hours between docking and all aboard.

Where you dock

Cruise ships call at the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal at Ballard Pier, in Ballard Estate in the south of the city. The location is excellent: the Gateway of India, the Fort district and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus are all minutes away.

Two practical things catch people out. Private vehicles are not allowed into the terminal, so any driver or guide meets you at Green Gate, just outside. And taxis do not queue at the terminal itself — the nearest rank is a short walk away, so do not step off expecting a line of cabs waiting for you.

Sort out your documents first

Whether you can go ashore independently depends on your nationality and on your cruise line’s arrangements with Indian immigration. Some passengers need an Indian e-visa; some itineraries are handled differently. Check with your cruise line before you book anything ashore, because if you cannot clear immigration, no tour can help.

If you are unsure, tell us your passport country and we will point you in the right direction.

The only rule that really matters

Get back to the ship. Everything else is secondary.

Mumbai traffic is the single biggest risk on a port day. A drive that takes twenty minutes at 7am can take an hour at 5pm, and it does not care about your sailing time. Plan your day backwards from all aboard, not forwards from docking, and leave a generous buffer.

Ship excursion or independent?

This deserves an honest answer rather than a sales pitch.

The ship’s own excursions have one real advantage: if the tour runs late, the ship waits for it. That guarantee is worth something, particularly if you are anxious about timing. The trade-off is large coaches, fixed routes and a price that reflects both.

An independent tour gives you a private car, a smaller group, your own pace and a guide who knows the city rather than a script. The trade-off is that the ship will not wait if you are late. So choose an operator who plans around your sailing time and has a genuine record of getting people back.

If timing makes you nervous and you do not want to think about it, book the ship’s excursion. We would rather you did that than spent the day watching the clock.

What you can realistically see

Four hours ashore: South Mumbai only. The Gateway of India and the Taj Mahal Palace, the Fort district, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, and a drive along Marine Drive. All close to the terminal, so you spend your time seeing rather than driving.

Six hours: add Crawford Market, Banganga Tank on Malabar Hill, the view over the bay from Kamala Nehru Park, and the Dhobi Ghat viewing deck.

Eight hours: now you can see the city properly, including an hour and a half walking through Dharavi with a local guide. For most of our cruise guests, that is the part they talk about afterwards.

What we would skip on a port day

Elephanta Caves. It is a wonderful trip, but it takes four to five hours on its own, depends on ferries, and is closed on Mondays. On a port day it will eat almost all your time. Read what to know about Elephanta if you are staying in Mumbai longer.

Anything far north. Bandra, Juhu and the suburbs are lovely but they are the wrong direction for a cruise day. Every hour north is an hour you have to drive back through traffic.

What to bring ashore

Your passport or whatever identification your cruise line requires for re-boarding. Water. Comfortable shoes. A light layer that covers shoulders and knees if you want to enter temples. Some rupees for small purchases and snacks. And your ship’s all-aboard time written somewhere that is not your phone.

About lunch

You will be hungry by midday and the city has excellent food. If you want to try street food on a port day, eat where locals are queueing and watch it cooked in front of you. We wrote a guide to where to eat street food in Mumbai, though on a tight schedule it is usually better to let your guide choose somewhere on the route.

Our shore excursion

Our Mumbai shore excursion is built entirely around the problem this article describes. We meet you at Green Gate with a name board, track your ship’s arrival, and plan the whole day backwards from your sailing time with a buffer at the end. Eight hours in a private air-conditioned car with a local guide, covering South Mumbai and an hour and a half in Dharavi.

Getting you back on time is the whole point of it. In more than a decade we have never had a guest miss a sailing, and we intend to keep it that way.

Common questions

Where does my cruise ship dock in Mumbai? At the Mumbai International Cruise Terminal, Ballard Pier, in Ballard Estate in south Mumbai.

Can I get a taxi at the cruise terminal? Not directly. Taxis do not queue at the terminal; the nearest rank is a short walk. Private vehicles meet passengers at Green Gate.

Do I need a visa to go ashore? It depends on your nationality and your cruise line’s arrangements. Check with your cruise line first.

How much can I see in one day? With eight hours and a private car, most of the major sights in south Mumbai plus Dharavi. With four hours, stay in south Mumbai.

What if my ship docks late? A good operator tracks your ship and moves the start time. Ours does.
